The Lust For Power: How Politics and Personal Relations Become One   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The stories of the Bible reveal a pattern of â€Å"ups and downs† for the nation of Israel. A period of prosperity, faithfulness and fearing God would almost always be followed by a period of destitution, lawlessness and idolatry. This recurring cycle can be linked to political authority, and the level of separation of political authority from other influences. The successful struggle for liberation under the leadership of Moses and the glorious conquest of Canaan under Joshua instilled a fresh breeze of hope and a renewed faith in God in the nation of Israel. Guided by God, the nation of Israel met with unprecedented success as they journeyed to the promised land. During this time, political authority among the Israelites rested in the hands of patriarchs, or prominent members within the tribes. These men were righteous figures of authority, chosen by God, to lead His people and to teach His ways. The success that swept over the Israelites was short-lived, however, and for the next two hundred years the people of Israel struggled against neighboring tribes. The new generation of Israelites â€Å"knew neither the Lord nor what he did for Israel† (Judges 2:10). They began to â€Å"do evil in the eyes of the Lord† by worshipping other gods and engaging in various sexual activities. To save His people from their enemies and from their â€Å"evil ways,† God â€Å"raised up† judges to rescue them (Judges 2:16). These so-called judges had the political authority vested in them to lead the people of Israel and to save them from their sins. They mobilized the people of Israel against invasions of the tribes all around them. At this time, the nation of Israel was nothing more than a loose confederation of twelve tribes. Israel had no central authority, which meant no unity, no organization and no power. During the period of the judges, there was no need for a central government, because the people of Israel were able to defend their tribal territories effectively against adjoining peoples. Whenever there was a threat from a neighboring tribe, God sent a judge to lead the Israelites against their enemies. As this era came to an end, however, the Israelites were faced with a much larger problem - the Philistines' military threat. As the Israelites were elimina... ... fighting for it. The judges were sent to lead the Israelites in times of need and emergency. Their leadership was only ephemeral, and thus not one of them were able to gain an exorbitant amount of political power. When the period of the monarchy was firmly in place, however, there was a system of succession of power. Even before the king muttered his last words, there were peopleeagerly waiting in line to take his place. And if that wasn't enough, people were plotting against the king in hopes of succeeding the throne, even his own sons. This feature of the period of the monarchy allowed for the mixing and intertwining of politics and personal relations. The use of women as symbols of power and dominance became abundant as kings challenged the prospective successors, and as prospective successors challenged the kings. Events took place that can be compared to episodes of TV soap operas or Melrose Place. Politics and personal relations became interrelated, and above all else, the underlying reason was power. As people began to lust for power, for wealth, and for recognition, the association of the two became imminent, and the separation of the two became impossible.

Function of Art Art connects people by offering an idea they can relate to. It is important as it helps to improve and learn in areas of communication, expression, and historical understanding. Another reason art is important is its interwoven relationship with culture on the basis that culture is articulated and influenced by art. It is a way to communicate and express ones thoughts and dreams through cinema, dance, literature, music, painting, sculpture, and theater. As a child I grew up in the Bay Area and was introduced to art at a very young age.I was very fortunate to be exposed to several types of art forms from going to the San Francisco ballet, the de Young Museum, the Curran or Orpheum Theater, and San Francisco Symphony. Even though I was introduced to art at a young age I did not come to fully appreciate art until much later in life. From kindergarten to fourth grade I took ballet. From fifth grade thru high school I was involved in music, theatre, and art through differe nt mediums such as painting, clay, and wire. I tend to lean toward art in the form of painting or theatre for inspiration.The artist that stands out is Jackson Pollock, an American painter whose form of painting is referred to as abstract expressionism. Jackson Pollock’s art conveys the mindset of Abstract Expressionism. The painting has a life of its own. Pollock’s paintings are a spirited technique of pouring and dripping paint onto a canvas on the floor. It has been said that Pollock is more at ease working on the floor as he feels closer to his painting literally seeing it from every side becoming one with the painting. Pollock’s painting aborts traditional composition and lacks a fundamental motif.His works stimulates the viewer’s peripheral vision thus one’s eyes are continuously moving. I am fascinated by his work, and can attain creative and inspiration from his paintings. Theatre stimulates creativity in problem solving and challenges perc eptions about the world and about one’s self. It provides an outlet for emotions, thoughts, and dreams and if only for a few moments explore a new role or understand problems faced by figures of literature or historical. Theatre is at the center of is communication.Like any arts theatre allows us to communicate and understand others in new and different ways. In today's increasingly information-centered world theatre provides guidance in the practical characteristics of communication. Participating in theatre made it easy for me to speak in public, be more persuasive both in oral and written communications and able to put myself into someone else’s shoes. It also made me a more positive, confident and discipline. Through theatre I learn to cooperate, work together, contribute, collaborative, listen and accept the viewpoints of others.Theatre is an important tool for preparing one to live and work in a world that is increasingly team-oriented rather than hierarchical. I have researched the subject of art serving a societal purpose. Art bring awareness to humanities by means of presenting truths that cannot be articulated in another way. Art connects a society by offering an idea most can relate to. Philosophies that come from art lead to an enriched society, as long as we take action based on the values seen in art. Art can inspire sympathetic but reveal misconceptions, which are parts of the human experience as related in society.Perception can be a beneficial as one gains a better understanding of their place in society and about society as a whole. If the individual puts this new understanding into practice society will profit. Although I have some background in the arts, I would like to further my learning and discover more areas, such as music, cinema, and dance. I find value in painting as it helps develop insightful meaning and entice creativity in me. Theatre has helped me to develop an understanding for the world and the physical elements within it.Finally, art should be viewed as serving a purpose to society an important aspect that connects people by offering an idea that people can relate to. In society, the biological difference between men and women is used as a justification for aligning them with different social roles which restrict and mold their attitudes and behavior. Merriam-Webster defines gender as the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex. Narrow minded society of today is not satisfied with the natural difference of sex, but each insist on adding a cultural difference of gender to it. Gender has a major impact on how our identity is developed through many interactions such as with parents, media, and peers. How people are raised in society reflects how they act and mature. Our society changes our attitudes and views on life more than our biological make-up. By establishing a new society, one where people are more accepting, will create peace amongst the sexes. Gender is a combination of what is seen, as well as how people think, feel, act and react to various situations. This blend of biological, psychological, and sociological features is developed based on how an individual is raised and influenced by the society in which they live and are apart of (Holter). Gender has a major impact on every aspect of a person’s life. It has a strong impact on the way people set goals, how they feel about themselves, and making work related decisions. It also has major impact on they way people dress, religion, relationships, and how they express feelings and emotions. Gender roles determine and directly affect how an individual thinks, speaks, and interacts within society (Guastello, 665). Gender schemas are deeply embedded cognitive frameworks regarding what define masculine and feminine (Guastello, 665). Social agents such as parents, teachers, peers, television, music, and books, demonstrate and reinforce gender roles throughout the lifespan of a person (Woodhill, 17). By developing a new society, the distorted definition of manhood and womanhood will be changed and seen in a more philosophical way. What is the role of the â€Å"female† in society? From decade to decade raising children and doing all the household chores belong to the female domain. Currently women are perceived as more communal (selfless and concerned with others) than men (Magner). These beliefs were hypothesized to stem from perceivers’ observations of women and men in differing social roles: (a) Women are more likely than men to hold positions of lower status and authority, and (b) women are more likely than men to be homemakers and are less likely to be employed in the paid work force. This newly developed definition of gender will re-construct the image of the ideal woman. Women will be liberated and will have the ability to do multiple tasks without judgement by men being passed upon them. The newly liberated woman will have a positive impact on society by showing that gender does not determine success. Women will be accepted and will defeat inequality. The male and androgynous perception of women will not create a sense of oppression by means of exploitation. It is also imperative to ask what is the role of the male in society? Society uses masculinity to define a man. In â€Å"Society and Sex Roles† by Ernestine Friedl, Friedl supports the the idea that suggests that † although the degree of masculine authority may very from one group to the next, males always have more power† (261). The traditional roles of a man was established to ensure the power of the head of household. From a historical stand point, it was always assumed that the head of the household was always the male. Today’s society have groomed people to believe and expect a man to be brave, industrious and domineering, whereas a woman is suppose to be submissive and nurturing (263). Men have also been raised to believe that their feelings and emotions are suppose to be hidden from others and should be dealt with internally. With creating this society, men will be able to express themselves without ridicule. Men will be able to continue to provide for their families, as well as maintaining a clean image without being labeled as â€Å"queer. † Men will have an overall promising and positive impact on society by creating a community where children will have positive male figure in their lives. This new type of man, one who is sensitive, caring and not afraid to vent his feelings will still be able to carry the burden of taking care of the household and the children in the event there is absence of the mother. The female and androgynous perception of a man will eliminate the dominance of a male’s ego. Androgyny is a word made up of two Greek roots. â€Å"Andro† which means males; whereas, â€Å"gyn† means female (Woodhill, 18). Androgyny is the state or condition of having a high degree of both feminine and masculine traits (18). Under these circumstances, human beings have loosely defined impulses and are free to express nontraditional values. Androgyny is not synonymous with any biological distinctions. According to D. D Guastello, sexual behavior or preference has nothing to do with gender identity (663). Androgyny, viewed as a balance between positive feminine and positive masculine traits, it blends the virtues of the male and female. There are two definitions for androgyny: physical (intersexual) – born with both male and female genitals; and psychological – combining both masculinity and femininity as traits of a unified gender that defies social roles and psychological attributes(664). The common usage of the term androgyny in society refers to the latter description (665). As to the sexual orientation, an androgynous person can be heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual. Androgynous individuals tend to behave in ways that counteract conventional gender stereotyping. With the constant change of American culture, the resiliency of androgynous individuals helps society deal with societal pressures. Individuals do not adhere to the same standards that gender-typed individuals do. As a result, they exude higher levels of self-esteem and psychological well-being (665). With creating this third gender, androgynous individuals will be able to live a life without ridicule from men and women who are different from them. Androgynous individuals have dealt with bullying, scolding, and ridicule and are not accepted because of what has been taught through one’s life. This new society will encourage androgynous individuals to feel more comfortable and live a healthy and satisfying life without being categorized as different. Today’s society does not embrace the idea of androgyny. These individuals will be the quintessential form of existence. They are an all encompassing gender which will make these individuals the ideal mate. These individuals will be able to contribute to the successes of the work place as well as domestically. An androgynous person will also be given the opportunity to hold political positions and well as lead congregations in worship services. The appeal of accepting the idea of adding androgynous gender to society will transcend and eliminate judgement based on physical attributes. It has been proven that gender roles in society have changed over the past decade and will continue to change as the next approaches (holter). Although these roles are ever changing, there are still entirely too many stereotypes and boundaries placed on each gender which cause a rift in relationships. These boundaries keep males and females from exploring their full capacity, completely accepting the idea of androgyny, and evolving into a society of equals across the board. This goes to show that people are easily manipulated through various sources into commonality. Society does not embrace individuality or differences, however; constantly being defined by sex, color, and race through gender prevents unity amongst the masses. Those stereotypical groups are also assigned attitudes, intelligence as well as work ethics. Currently, should people run across someone who doesn’t conform to their beliefs and ideas, the likelihood of them being congenial is substantially reduced. Furthermore, men and women have the same emotions but their gender behaviors are conditioned by social norms varying from culture to culture. From the historical point of view, it has been come to the light that, invention of electric bulb was done by Sir Joseph Wilson Swan, an English physicist for the first time and then by the year of 1878, all of England was dazzling with the electric lamps. Then, the next year one and only Thomas Edison designed an actual modern electric bulb which could give light even for more than fifteen hundred hours and forty hours more than that of the conventional electric bulbs. Contemporary style electric bulbs with greater luminance were then introduced by the year 1888 across the globe (Whiting, 2008). In the painting, it has been illustrated with brilliant approach while looking closely towards the right side of the buildings. These buildings those are present here at righ t side of the painting are emitting bright light which cant be possible in case of lamps or candles. So, the arrival of a new era of electric bulbs has been demonstrated here marvelously with a little tinge of secrecy (Whiting, 2008). The painter of The Caf Terrace on the Place du Forum, Vincent Van Gogh belonged to Dutch nationality. His childhood was deeply attached with the community of church as he grew up there. So, light had become the profoundest meaning of his life bestowed upon him within the milieu of a divine atmosphere of church, the place of god (Pottharst Knecke, 2013). This source of life put great positive impact on his heart and by presenting this thought on canvas he got succeeded to enlighten about the meaning of life to the enthusiasts. It influenced the painter to a greater extent and it can also be realized by recognizing his predecessors who were preachers in the church (FORD, 1989). A vista of beautiful sparkling stars in the sky at the night time is the scene often found in the masterpieces of Van Gogh. It seems the painter got mesmerized by the glittering panorama of stars and thats why he painted this view in most of his art works. It also conveys one of the deepest ideas of the artist about the infinity related to the space and he poured it from his heart as an illustration that enlightens peoples thought about god with which Vincent grew up throughout his early days. The painter depicted his feeling taken from the bottom of his heart on the canvas which was about god and his infinite extent of power. In this spectacular piece of art, there is only one person who seems to be a servant according to his dressing style personifies the similitude of Jesus who is the son of God himself (Geroimenko, 2012). As Van Gogh grew up with a religious upbringing throughout his life, it put reflective influence on his artistic soul. He got tremendously moved by the verse Luke 22:26 of the holy Bible which states that among the people of earth standing or position will be something different and people with great divine qualities will be placed at the lower ranks which mean the leaders will become servants. This thinking of servants the mirror images of leaders was nicely put on the canvas by Vincent Van Gogh who wittingly placed a servant who has resemblance with Jesus, the Savior of the entire universe (Monkfort, 2015). He therefore perfectly illustrated the servant at a position in the painting which would be the center of focus, the heart of the masterpiece. In this modern era where technology is king and therefore people end up with short-term attention to the relic designed by legendary artists without knowing the thoughts coming from the bottom of heart. Van Gogh illustrated the fact of life in his art piece with a simplified message by portraying the entire painting in a style of short movie with which people could understand its gravity and inner thinking. For the modification part, the message should be conveyed with a simple short film that will be comprehended by the common people. This is possible by portraying all the colors and colorful effects at the same positions with that of the paining as well as the Caf Terrace. The Caf of Van Gogh will be an appropriate title which suits the environment of the painting and with this a tribute can be given to the artist (Pottharst Knecke, 2013). The short film will get started with a close-up view concentrating on the stones of the street and then wide view towards the giant structures of caf. The pace of the scene is the key factor here and it can be properly demonstrated with a fast forwarding scene of people entering into the caf but the background with sparkling lights as well as the sunset scene behind the buildings should be illustrated with close-up view and with slower pace and tempo, With this, the impact of the theme will get penetrated right through the core of heart and the message will be conveyed fittingly to the viewers (Geroimenko, 2012). In just a scene about twenty seconds, the shot will illustrate the busy life of people going in and coming out of the caf. Then, during the time alternation the attire of the people will also get changed as the actors and actresses will be shooting the previous scene in the attires of 1888. The next scene will be about a person heading towards the Caf with his friend so that they could enjoy a delicious meal. At this point of era, the technological advancement can be described by putting mobile phones in the hands of the people while enjoying the sunset at the caf. Then, the servant dressed neatly with white clothing will enter to the scene and time will slow and this can be observed by the much slower swinging of the doors than the normal pace. In this busy environment where technology has taken the peak spot nobody will be aware of the presence of this white dressed servant (Pottharst Knecke, 2013). The servants face should be indistinguishable by the viewers as the camera has not been zoomed enough and focus the face of the servant, only the scene will convey that he is pouring water from his pitcher to the glasses and when water reaches at the bottom of the glass cups, it gets tuned into wine amazingly. Then, camera will get zoomed perfectly focusing his pierced hands with a close-up view where people will get astounded that he actually is Jesus, not anyone else. Then, a quick glimpse of the face of Jesus will be shown to the audience but the bustling scene will get continue as if nobody has seen that Jesus was there before sometime (Mokhtar, 2013). The servant of divinity, the son of God is everywhere but people are unable to see him due to lack of faith and inclination towards modernism. Then, the following scene will be a distant view of the caf of Van Gogh and then towards the endless dark sky with countless glittery stars. In this way, the post-impressionism style of Van Goghs painting and the message inside it can be simply put forward to the people. The only message that should be displayed on the screen will be according to the viewpoint of Vincent Van Gogh, what he would try to tell the people if he were still at this hectic place on earth where people have no time to ask about any other person. His style of interpretation will have much more value on the screen if it will be displayed precisely by depicting Jesus as the servant of the world who also is the creator (Monkfort, 2015). The entire film will be on the background of religious context and the viewers who dont believe in Christianity might not get the message. Nevertheless, those viewers who are true art lovers can understand the theme quickly. This short film can be displayed in the art galleries, churches and other spiritual institutions by the hidden message inside it which will act like a magnet and people will get magnetized towards it to get the core message at the ending which is about how modern-day people get distracted from the existence of God as well as it will also describe about spectators understanding about the creativity and profundity that lies in this work of art and masterpiece developed by renowned painter Vincent Van Gogh (Mokhtar, 2013). The visionary painter sold only one piece of this art before his soul got rest in peace. Many critics argue that it is not about the glittering effects of the electric bulbs but about the sparkling stars in the sky.
